When applying for Asia-Link, participants were asked to choose which demonstration they wanted to attend from a list of 12 artists.
After much deliberation, I chose Mr. Lam from Vietnam. The deciding factor was his powerful line work. I wanted to learn his technique of creating a complete picture with just lines and his effective use of watercolor accents.
'm still exploring different drawing styles, trying various methods to find a comfortable style of my own one day. This time, I'm determined to learn Mr. Lam's line work.
The demonstration was held at the Thai restaurant, Blue Elephant. It began in the center of the garden with about 15 participants.
His powerful lines were created with a handmade dip pen made from chopsticks. The lines were drawn steadily and without hesitation. He started with the dip pen, and then used a fountain pen for details like the trees in the background.
The ink he used was Platinum Carbon Ink, which many of us also use. He explained that he puts cotton inside the ink bottle, soaking it with an appropriate amount of ink to ensure the pen picks up just the right amount.

He also happily agreed to have his work shared on social media.
His drawing style—starting from one end and building the picture like a jigsaw puzzle without any preliminary sketching—is not something that can be easily imitated. However, seeing him draw up close sparked my curiosity and made me want to try it myself immediately. I am truly grateful for this opportunity.

For lunch that day, we ate at Blue Elephant, the restaurant that was just drawn. It's a famous restaurant featured in the Michelin Guide. It was definitely the most expensive meal of the trip! The dishes, cutlery, and everything else were a bit luxurious and lovely. The taste was, of course, wonderful.
At our table, besides the members I was traveling with, I was able to connect with Mr. K from USk Bali and Ms. F, who now lives in the UK. She has lived in Japan before and is fluent in Japanese. We sketched and dined together several times after that. Making wonderful connections is one of the joys of a sketching trip.
've included a few photos of the extravagant meal.
After a satisfying meal, I hurried to the Merlin Hotel to catch a demonstration by my admired Korean artist, Mr. In-Hong Park. The story of that demonstration and the subsequent Sketchwalk at the shipyard will continue in the next report...
