Getting Lost on the Streets of Yanesen /

Image
November is my favorite month. In Tokyo, autumn gets its colors deeper and darker—leaves turning red and yellow, night getting longer. Winter approaches, but it’s still warm enough in the daytime to sketch outside. The weather becomes stable after the typhoon season and now we can walk around to find beautiful autumn views. That’s why I suggested Yanesen (collective name for the three adjoining neighborhoods; Yanaka, Nezu, and Sendagi) for the month’s meet-up. A perfect weather was needed to explore the small winding lanes in the area. By Tetsu-san And that was the right choice. See? As expected, we had a lot of participants this month. It’s not really surprising anymore the group was this big.

Image
I've been having this casual sketch outing with a good circle of friends recently. Just recently (tho, it's already a month ago), we went out to Ningyo-cho area in Tokyo, and did some sketching of their retro-ish neighborhood. みんなと合流する前に入ったカフェ、良い雰囲気の高い壁に圧倒されつつ、がんばった(笑) Before meeting up with friends, had lunch at this fancy cafe in Hama-cho. It was too fancy I kinda got overwhelmed sketching it and it shows doesn't it? Here's the old looking neighborhood. This is a Sushi restaurant close by.  I knew that I couldn't capture the whole thing, so I started from drawing the air duct on the left side page, and drew whatever I wanted to draw, not thinking about completing the whole building.

Three Simple Sketches - 3

Image
I used to draw anything in front of me with assurance and abandon, in a simple style.  But increasing self-expectations -of sketching in colour, using good paper, or making a professional-looking picture- have driven me in a corner where I don't dare to pick up my sketchbook anymore.  "Will it be good enough to show to everyone?" "Does it qualify as an 'urban sketch'?" "Is it finished?" Muji notebook - Pilot Kakuno with extra-fine nib, filled with Platinum Carbon Ink - Pentel Fude Brush Pen GFKP   So, I reduced my gear to a cheap sketchbook, an extra-fine fountain pen and a brush-pen.  They can all fit in the inner pocket of my jacket.  And so, whenever I found myself having a few minutes free, I just pulled my sketchbook out and made a simple doodle-like sketch. No pressure!
